BAHATI HOUSE - VILLA

‘Bahati’ in Kiswahili means ‘luck.’ Bahati House was the original property that was renovated and turned into a simple and affordable guesthouse. The owners realized the potential of the area and began to build the two villas of Kikadini and Maroc (six more are planned for the future). Villa Bahati , Villa Kikadini, and Villa Maroc are three charming Zanzibari Villas situated in the small rural village of Jambiani on the Southeast coast of Zanzibar. The villas are understated and uncomplicated, yet very appealing and comfortable. They are built among scenic palm trees and face the picture-perfect white beach. • ‘Bahati’ is slightly larger with five rooms which can be rented out individually, or as a set for larger groups. It sleeps up to 10 people. The rooms and en-suite bathrooms are Moroccan inspired and give a true African feel to the place. Each of the five rooms (four twins and one double) has a unique look and forms a self-contained unit around the central patio on the first floor. The sultan-style beds are beautifully draped with mosquito nets and the rooms have ceiling fans to keep you cool. On the second floor there’s a massive terrace that houses a lounge and a restaurant. They also have a pretty front garden facing the beach that creates a real homely atmosphere.
• ‘Kikadini’ is a single unit that sleeps a maximum of 6 people and therefore ideal for small groups, families or a romantic couple. The architecture is a blend of African and Arabic styles and makes for a magical atmosphere. Kikadini is ideal for families as it has two beachfront en-suite master bedrooms with beautiful views of the white sands and the turquoise waters, as well as one smaller room, the Giraffe Room with a separate bathroom. The master bedrooms are large and come equipped with big sultan beds and draped mosquito nets (only one of these rooms has a ceiling fan), while the Giraffe room has a smaller double bed and a ceiling fan (this one is ideally suited to young adults). The villa also has its own huge private patio.
• ‘Maroc’ is truly romantic and specifically designed as a honeymoon suite. Villa Maroc has recently been completed and is a honeymooner’s dream. It has two bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and sleeps 2 to 4 guests. The villa has a really romantic open air bathtub and a private roof terrace with fantastic views of the starry skies at night.

BARAZA RESORT

The Evergreen Bungalows on the East Coast of Zanzibar is a small and relaxed, family run beach hotel. The atmosphere is intimate and tranquil with spectacular views across the coral reef and the azure Indian Ocean beyond. The activities include: -

DOLHIN OCEAN VIEW

Dolphin Ocean View is a 3 star facility with African style bungalows. The hotel offers 2 restaurants. 1 beach bar, 2 swimming pools, beach front, underground dinners, bridge into the sea, best views of sunset. It is close to dolphin area, dive centre, a beach club with BBQ lunch, free transport to private beach club by bus or boat, and two thematic nights for the week with African entertainment.

Dolphin has 36 rooms with fans 3 or 4 beds per room. Hot water is available.

CHUMBE ISLAND CORAL PARK

Chumbe Island Coral Park is a Marine Protected Area (MPA). Its main focus is as a conservation and education project. The entire island is a natural reserve. It is a prime example of ecotourism in the World, having collected awards in this respect. There are a number of activities that a visitor to the island can take part in, namely: - Snorkeling through the shallow waters of the reef sanctuary, Exploring the forest reserve. Walk on the nature trails, Viewing the historical monument – Chumbe Lighthouse (built 1904), Enjoying dinner in what used to be the lighthouse keeper’s house, which has been converted into a visitors centre.

Accommodation can also be found here in the name of the Chumbe Island Eco Lodge. This lodge is absolutely eco-friendly in all aspects. It has only seven (7) bungalows that all overlook the sea. Each bungalow is equipped with Double/ Twin beds, Self contained bathrooms, Large Living Room.

The ‘eco- bungalows are built using ‘eco – architecture’ and eco – technology.’ Water is harvested from the rain, filtered and stored in underground tanks for use in bathing, etc. Water for bathing is heated using solar power. Water from showers is collected, filtered and used again in the plant beds. The toilets are composting toilets to avoid seepage from a sewer system into the reef. Lights are powered by panels on the roof. The open design of the bungalows allows for air circulation, i.e. natural air conditioning. The soaps used are organic and made by locals. Drinking water is provided for all using advanced filters (from Switzerland) thus no bottled water is required here. No artificial light at night along the walkways. Torches are provided for visitors.

These are the features that make Chumbe Island Coral Park so unique.

CHOLE MJINI LODGE

Chole Mjini is a tree house lodge on a tiny island off the island of Mafia.

There are 7 rooms at Chole Mjini, all but one having been built as tree houses on stilts and all are very private from each other. They are simple and rustic, but very comfortable. All are individual in style and some are doubles, some family and some twins. Hot water is on demand and very quick to heat up. The rooms at Chole Mjini face north and stay cool with open sides for cooling breezes. They are furnished inside with 4-poster beds and have a ‘day bed’ lounge area too. They are a great place to sit in the early evening watching the birds come home to roost in the trees all around Chole Mjini. There is no electricity, but oil lamps are left on overnight, and reading torches are provided. The bathrooms, with open-air shower and composting toilet, are downstairs.

The clear, protected waters offer wonderful snorkeling, diving, sailing and swimming. The Scuba here is some of the best in the world. Bird-watching is excellent and very different to the mainland parks. The tidal flats and mangroves are always alive with coastal and sea birds and there are many colorful woodland and forest species. There are also roosts of the unusual and fascinating giant Madagascan fruit bat to see on Chole Island.

KINASI LODGE

Kinasi Lodge originally was a private home before it was converted into a small, private lodge. It is situated in a coconut and cashew plantation facing Chole Bay on Mafia Island. Kinasi is beautifully furnished with antiques and hand-crafted furniture. Most of all there is tranquility and privacy in beautiful, natural surroundings. This little retreat offers various facilities which include a dining room, swimming pool, gardens and beach.

It provides a high standard of accommodation in only twelve bungalows (one is a family unit with two bedrooms), each with a large verandah and en suite bathroom.

The bungalows have been constructed in rendered concrete block, with palm-leaf (makuti) roofs, and concrete foundations and floors. There is all-day mains electricity and hot and cold water supply from three permanent wells on the property. The intention has been to create a resort that is relaxing and stylish, with a very personal feel.

POLE POLE RESORT

Pole Pole is located in the Chole Bay area, near Utende village on the southeast coast of the Mafia Island Marine Park. It lies on the beach, within a tropical garden, overlooking a spectacular view of the Mafia Archipelago and the Indian Ocean. Other facilities include, Massage, Library, Bar/ Restaurant, Laundry service is available and complimentary, Beach ‘kitenge’ (or local cloth) are provided for your use on the boats and on the beach, Hot and cold water is available 24 hours, A hair dryer can be borrowed from the reception, A few useful items (shampoo, suntan lotions, sanitary absorbents, Kodak films etc.) as well as local fabrics, carvings and beach items are for sale at the bar & restaurant, VISA and Mastercard credit cards are accepted, (authorisation costs are involved), A safety box is available and located at the reception.

Its seven spacious en suite bungalows are set in tropical gardens and were built by local craftsmen entirely of local timber. Raised on stilts, each unit has a private veranda with a Zanzibari bed for those essential afternoon siestas. Indoors, the bed linen has been imported from Italy, the bathrooms have double basins and the showers are king-sized. Gauzy drapes hang at the windows. Beyond, there are endless views to the horizon. The suites are elegant and spacious, and are set among the coconut palms overlooking the bay. The rooms are furnished with carved and antique pieces. Twin and double beds are available and an extra bed can be provided. Two bungalows are ‘family’ type with two rooms separated by the bathroom and a small corridor for privacy. The large private verandahs are furnished with a Zanzibari bed, chairs, table and an armchair. Each bungalow is self-contained; the bathroom is spacious and comfortable. There are two ceiling fans, one on the verandah and one in the bedroom above the bed. This is a low environmental impact resort with a state-of-the-art phyto-purification plant which is a special process of treating waste water to prevent environmental pollution.

There are different types of activities or excursions: by boat, by 4x4 car or walking and light trekking. The activities in the marine park are: scuba diving, snorkeling, sailing and visiting the local villages. Pole Pole organises boat excursions and picnics to isolated islets, sandbanks or islands every day, according to the tide.

FUNDU LAGOON

Fundu Lagoon is the epitome of a "bare foot paradise" with a distinct Robinson Crusoe air in a remote and peaceful location. The main hotel is built under thatch and is large and airy and overlooks the sea. The two bars and a restaurant, are specifically designed and crafted to blend with the natural environment of the fertile isle. Meals are served either in the dining area, the jetty or on the white sandy beach. Furnishings are stylishly made from local material.

Fundu Lagoon comprises 19 bungalows, located either directly on the beach or high on the ridge of the peninsula, all with superb sweeping views of the bay. Each room has a private balcony and en suite bathroom.

The hotel has a fully equipped dive centre, Trips are available to nearby Misali Island with a pristine beach and superb snorkeling and diving, Dhow sunset cruises, canoe safaris through the mangroves, sailing trips on a 30’ catamaran or in the canoes of the local fishermen are also available.

MANTA REEF LODGE

The resort is focused around a large open planned relaxing area that welcomes you to the sea. Life on Pemba revolves around the ocean tides, and as the day progresses you will witness the ever changing colors and shades of blue and green as the tide ebbs and flows. Other facilities include a Restaurant Bar, Beach Lounge, and Spa. This is an ‘All Inclusive’ resort.

• Sea Front Villas: - Six newly built luxury sea front villas. These air-conditioned villas are spacious and private, with a centered king size bed and large en-suite bathroom. A secluded sun terrace faces a spectacular ocean sunset.
• Superior Garden Rooms: - Two pairs make up the four Superior Garden Rooms with views of the sea between the foliage. One of the two pairs has an interconnecting door which makes it an excellent choice for families or larger groups. The Superior Garden Rooms are air conditioned with a king sized four poster bed and private ‘makuti’ thatch covered terrace. The 'baraza' lounger can be used as a third bed and a fourth single bed can be added on request. En suite bathroom.
• Garden Rooms: - The brand new cottages are affordable accommodation. They are nicely set in the gardens with wooden floors, mosquito net covered king size beds, Lamu floored en suite bathrooms, and ‘makuti’ thatched verandah - all with views overlooking the Pemba channel.
